Peperino. Iron. And the unusual bronze year of 1999. Peperino. Ferro. E l'anno inconsueto del bronzo, 1999.

In the nineties the material hardens. Paul turns decisively to peperino, the grey volcanic stone of the Roman countryside, and couples it with oxidised iron — the marriage of these two materials will stay with him for the next twenty years.

1999 is an outlier: a small group of bronze works, patinated green, set on painted wooden bases. These feel more formal than anything else in the archive — a brief engagement with the sculptural language of the established post-war tradition. After 1999 he never casts bronze again.

Negli anni Novanta il materiale si fa duro. Paul si rivolge decisamente al peperino, la pietra vulcanica grigia della campagna romana, e lo sposa al ferro ossidato — il matrimonio di questi due materiali lo accompagnerà per i vent'anni successivi.

Il 1999 è un'eccezione: un piccolo gruppo di opere in bronzo, con patina verde, su basi di legno dipinto. Sono più formali di tutto il resto dell'archivio — un breve dialogo con il linguaggio scultoreo della tradizione post-bellica. Dopo il 1999 non tornerà mai più al bronzo.
