Legno

Chestnut and pine, raw or painted — totems, structures, polychrome assemblies. Castagno e pino, grezzo o dipinto — totem, strutture, assemblaggi policromi.

Wood is Paul's most recurring material — the substance he returns to when he wants to think with his hands. Across the 2000s and 2010s he produces dozens of works in chestnut, pine, plywood, sometimes coated in red or black acrylic, sometimes left raw with the saw marks visible.

The wooden totems are perhaps his most architectural impulse: vertical assemblies of stacked elements that read like buildings reduced to a sketch. Some reach toward the ceiling; others remain small and dense, fitting in the palm of a hand.

Among the wood works there are pieces of polychrome assembly — wood combined with papier-mâché and saturated colour — which mark the bridge between the dry, structural totems and the painterly wall reliefs of the 2010s.

Il legno è il materiale più ricorrente di Paul — la sostanza a cui torna quando vuole pensare con le mani. Negli anni 2000 e 2010 produce decine di opere in castagno, pino, multistrato, a volte coperte di acrilico rosso o nero, a volte lasciate grezze con i segni della sega visibili.

I totem in legno sono forse il suo impulso più architettonico: assemblaggi verticali di elementi impilati che si leggono come edifici ridotti a uno schizzo. Alcuni arrivano verso il soffitto; altri restano piccoli e densi, stanno nel palmo di una mano.

Tra le opere in legno ci sono pezzi di assemblaggio policromo — legno unito a cartapesta e colore saturo — che segnano il ponte tra i totem secchi e strutturali e i rilievi murali pittorici degli anni 2010.
